Welcome Events

The Mauritius Wushu Federation is recognized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Mauritius National Olympic Committee and the Mauritius Sports Council as the official body for the promotion and development of Wushu (Chinese Martial Art) in Mauritius. Previously working independently and through help from voluntary work of wushu disciples (past and present) the MWuF now seeks to share this sport among more mauritians around the island.

Wushu, more commonly known as Kung Fu, has a long history through the Chinese culture, more than 3000 B.C. Presently as one of the most popular sport presented through movies and actors like Jet Li or Jackie Chan, this sport is now introduced to all Mauritians through the Federation which is affiliated to the INTERNATIONAL WUSHU FEDERATION (IWUF).

We invite you to visit the MWuF portal to discover more on this sport and the clubs that exist in Mauritius.

Wushu to be part of Beijing Olympic Games
Wushu competitors at the 10th National Games yesterday had more than a medal to look forward to the martial arts genre will for the first time be included in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sprung the pleasant surprise on wushu aficionados who had been pushing for the sport to be made an official event.
"There will be a wushu competition during the Olympic Games. It's not going to be one of the official 28 sports but we will organize with BOCOG (the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad) a wushu competition," said Rogge at the opening ceremony of the Sixth Art Exhibition of Sports in China in Nanjing yesterday morning.
When Beijing won the right to host the 2008 Games, proponents wanted wushu, one of the traditional sports in China to be listed as an Olympic sport for the home Games. The IOC turned down the proposal but kept the door open for it to be a representation sport.
But Rogge did not clarify if wushu will be regarded as a demonstration sport like taekwondo and tennis, which were earlier demonstration sports and have now become official events at Olympic Games.
While medals will be awarded for demonstration sports, they will not count towards the official tally of nations.
In 2002, the IOC decided to cap the number of Olympic sports at 28.

Wushu needs to be standardized for popularity, said official
Sunday, November 18th, 2007
From Xinhuanet

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — Wang Xiaolin, president of the Chinese Wushu Association (CWA), spoke highly of the rapid development of wushu here on Friday, saying that the simplification and standardization are necessary for the popularization of wushu in the future.
”China dominates wushu, but the competition between foreign and Chinese athletes is becoming more and more fierce,” commented Wang, Secretary-General of the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) and President of the CWA amid the Wushu World Championships.
The 9th World Wushu Championships, being successfully held here from Nov. 11 to 17, has attracted a record entry of nearly 1000 athletes from 89 countries and regions.
After the 5-day taolu (routines) competition, fifteen countries and regions have been awarded the medals while eleven of them reaped the golds and twenty have been ranked in the top eight.
”I’m delighted to see such a situation because it means that wushu is becoming increasingly popular among the whole world,” said Wang.
When asked about the popularization of wushu in the future, Wang said that the simplification and standardization are critical steps for wushu to achieve sustainable development in the world.
”We have made great progress in the standardization of the competition. For example, the computer-scoring system has been introduced for fairness of the game and three teams of judges are required to be responsible for technical quality, difficulty and athlete’s level respectively.”
”Besides, wushu needs to be simple as many foreign people finds it hard to learn. This is because wushu derives from a wide variety of ancient Chinese martial arts and the ethics of it is profound.
”However, we will try to simplify the procedure and scoring rules for its globalization in the future.”
On wushu’s possible entry into the Olympics, Wang pointed out that three steps were needed. First, the members of the IWUF (currently 120 countries and regions) should be enlarged. Second, wushu has to become the official programme of a few more major games, such as the African Games, Pan-American Games and so on. Third, television coverage should increase and more well-known commercial enterprises should support wushu events.
”We are confident that it will enter the Olympics one day but there’s still a long way to go. However, it’s not the whole thing as our aim is that Chinese wushu can be enjoyed around the world and help people become healthy,” said Wang.
Toronto of Canada will host the 10th World Wushu Championships in 2009.

The 9th World Wushu Championships will be held from November 11 to 17, 2007 in Beijing, China.

The 9th World Wushu Championships opened here on Sunday at Beijing Olympics Sports Center with a record entry of nearly 1,000 athletes from 89 countries and regions.
Liu Peng, president of Chinese Olympic Committee, declared open the 6-day tournament. Then, the magnificent Taijiquan (shadowboxing) performance acted by one thousand Chinese masters illuminated the spectacular opening ceremony with the theme “Wushu belongs to the world”.
Li Lianjie (Jet Li), the well-known Hollywood Kung Fu star presented as the special guest and delivered a speech to the audiences, “I feel delighted that the Wushu Championship returns to our hometown and I hope in the rest of my lifetime I can spread the spirit of Wushu which includes humanity, peace, harmony and wisdom to every corner of the world.”
Wushu, which derives from a wide variety of ancient Chinese martial arts, is composed of two disciplines: taolu (routines) and sanshou (fight).
In the 9th world championship, taolu covers 22 categories in which Taijiquan (shadow boxing) and Taijijian will adopt incidental music during the competitions for the first time. While sanshou comprises 18 categories which divided into men’s 11 classes and women’s 7 classes.
